Virgin Wood Type Logo

Gill Sans

Gill Sans is cut from 28 pica maple patterns that were originally from Stephenson Blake & Co. from England. This font was part of the collection obtained from American Wood Type Manufacturing Company (view their sample).

Designed by Eric Gill in the 1920s. Gill was a well established sculptor, graphic artist and type designer, and the Gill Sans typeface takes inspiration from Edward Johnston's Johnston typeface for London Underground, which Gill had worked on while apprenticed to Johnston. The font was released in metal in 1928 by Monotype.

Caps, lowercase and figures are available for this font. We are also offering Gill Sans Light, Gill Sans Bold, and Gill Sans Condensed from the extended Gill Sans family.
